SPHYNX CAT INFORMATION

Bathing hairless cats:

Due to the lack of hair present on Sphynx cats, oil, which would normally be absorbed by hair, can build up on their bodies and attract dirt. As a result, hairless cat and kittens s do require weekly to monthly bathing at all (depending on the individual cat). Some cats do stay cleaner longer than others, depending on their own body chemistry. Bathing is a simple, five-minute task easily accomplished since Sphynx kittens are accustomed to bathing at an early age. Some actually enjoy their baths and will purr while being lathered up. Most of our Sphynx cats think bath time is actually kitty massage time.... shhh. Often times, these silly naked cats will jump in the tub or shower with you to splash around in the water with their wrinkled bare selfs. We use Dove Cream Oil Body Wash and bath gloves to bath our hairless cats and kittens. The bath gloves cut bathing time in half and help to gently exfoliate leaving their skin leaving it smooth, soft, and clean. Care is taken not to get soap/water in their ears and eyes while bathing.

Sphynx Cat ear cleaning:

Also due to the lack of hair, Sphynx cats' ears tend to build up with a brown waxy substance that requires weekly to twice monthly attention (again depending on the individual hairless cat). We use OtiCalm ear cleaner. After putting several drops of cleaner on a Q-tip (instead of directly into the ear), carefully use them to remove the wax. Care has to be taken not to injure their ears with the Q-tips. Never go farther down than you can see. Ear cleaning also takes only a few minutes.

SPHYNX CAT TEMPERAMENTS

Sphynx cats are a very lively, comical, and intelligent hairless breed of cats. They are extremely friendly and outgoing, almost always being in the mood to snuggle. Part monkey, child, and dog is probably the best way to describe these naked kitties. They prefer to sleep under the covers next to their humans at night and bask in the sun during the daylight hours, that is if they're not following you around from room to room during the day. They are not usually timid and aloof, as many domestic cats can be. Sphynx cats are not a one-person cat; they usually get along with every member of the family (whether two- or four-legged). Hardly a dull moment goes by when you have a Sphynx cat in the house to entertain you. Because of their extremely affectionate nature, they do best in homes with other pets, preferably another hairless cat or two. They normally get along with all different types of pets.

TEMPERATURE

Sphynx cats and kittens are indoor cats and should not be left outside unattended. As a general rule, Sphynx cats are comfortable when we would be comfortable [naked]. During the cold winter months, I provide my hairless cats with heated ped beds, which they greatly appreciate. Sphynx cats like to be warm. Because Sphynx cats and kittens tend to burn more energy keeping warm without the insulating fur, they do have higher metabolisms that your average cat. We feed our Sphynx high-quality foods including our own homemade preparation, Wellness, Nature's Variety, and sometimes Science Diet.

SPHYNX CAT APPEARANCE

A common misconception is that the Sphynx cat has no hair at all, but in fact, this is far from true! This is often the first question asked of us at cat shows. Some do have very short, fine hair over their bodies that can be felt but not easily seen. This is the skin texture that we breed for in our hairless cats because we find it to be the most pleasant / desirable. The most hairless cats feel rubbery and sometimes even sticky. The most pleasant texture is certainly on those cats with fine, short hair covering their entire bodies. Most Sphynx cats have slight hair on their nose and ears, while some have hair on their tails and feet. This hair is usually very fine and soft. Wrinkled skin is highly desirable trait on these hairless cats, particularly around the muzzle, between the ears, and around the shoulders. They have surprisingly warm, muscular bodies with dumbo ears and captivating lemon-shaped eyes that seem to stare into your soul. Their chest is well rounded with a thick, muscular neck. Sphynx males are usually larger than Sphynx females. Adult females usually weigh between 6 and 10 pounds, while males are usually between 9 and 15 pounds.
